HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION
• IDLH:
10
mg[Ag]/m3 as soluble silver compounds.
•
OSHA Table Z-1 Air Contaminant
•
Corrosive to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Corrosive when ingested.
Contact with concentrated solutions will produce irritation, ulceration, and
discoloration of the skin; also causes severe irritation of the eyes. Ingestion
will produce violent abdominal pain and other gastroenteric symptoms. May
affect the blood; methemoglobin may be formed; the effects may be delayed.
Ingestion of nitrates has been implicated with cancer increase. Inhalation of
dust causes argyrosis. Chronic skin exposure will cause argyria, a blue-gray
discoloration of the eyes, skin, and brown fingernails. A mutagen.
Exposure Limits:
TWA
•
ACGIH TLV: metal: 0.1 mg[Ag]/m3 TWA; soluble compounds: 0.01 mg[Ag]/m3 TWA
•
OSHA PEL/NIOSH REL: metal, dust, and soluble compounds: 0.01 mg[Ag]/m3 TWA
•
DFG MAK: silver: 0.1 mg[Ag]/m3 ; silver salts: 0.01 mg[Ag]/m3
Respirator:
0.25
mg/m3:
SA:CF (any
supplied-air respirator operated in a continuous-flow mode) PAPRHiE (any
powered, air-purifying respirator with a high-efficiency particulate filter).
0.5 mg/m3:
HiEF (any air-purifying, full-facepiece
respirator with a highefficiency particulate filter) SCBAF (any selfcontained
breathing apparatus with a full facepiece) SAF (any supplied-air respirator
with a full facepiece).
10
mg/m3:
SAF:PD,PP (any
supplied-air respirator that has a full facepiece and is operated in a
pressuredemand or other positive-pressure mode).
Note:
Substance causes eye irritation or damage;
eye protection needed.
Emergency
or Planned Entry into Unknown Concentrations or IDLH Conditions
SCBAF:PD,PP (any self-contained breathing
apparatus that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressuredemand or
other positive-pressure mode) SAF:PD,PP:ASCBA (any supplied-air respirator that
has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressuredemand or other
positive-pressure mode in combination with an auxiliary self-contained
breathing apparatus operated in a pressure-demand or other positive-pressure
mode).
Escape:
HiEF
(any airpurifying, full-facepiece respirator with a highefficiency particulate
filter) SCBAE (any appropriate escape-type, self-contained breathing
apparatus).
Reactivity:
An
oxidizer; violent reaction with reducing agents or combustible materials.
Contact with acetylene forms shock-sensitive materials. Contact with ammonia
forms compounds that are explosive when dry. Hydrogenperoxide causes violent
decomposition to oxygen gas. Attacks some plastics, rubber, and coatings.
FIRE INFORMATION
Noncombustible
solid. If material or contaminated runoff enters waterways, notify downstream
users of potentially contaminated water.

FIRST AID:
Move
victim to fresh air. Call emergency medical care. Apply artificial respiration
if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove
and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance,
immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Keep
victim warm and quiet. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the
material(s) involved, and take precautions to protect themselves.
