The company F.I.C.E.M. (Fabbrica Italiana Costruzioni Elettromeccaniche Milano) was set up in 1947 and, during thirty years of intense activity, made remarkable progress from both a technical and production-related viewpoint and, by the middle of the 1960s, was able to boast an 800- strong staff, with continuous processing over three shifts all year round, a strong sales structure with representatives and warehouses in every region in Italy and exports to North Africa and USA. The social changes which took place between the end of the 1960s and the first half of the 1970s and the liberalisation of the markets meant a structure of such dimensions was no longer competitive, leading to the closure of production at the end of the 1970s. As happens ever more frequently in deindustrialised areas, some manual workers and technicians decided to continue the business, albeit with a reduced cycle and almost nonexistent financial resources; the experience and professionalism matured by these individuals over the years allowed and still allows a historical brand from a national electromechanical point of view to maintain its presence on the market, in spite of the ongoing uphill struggle with the emerging countries.
