CARBON MONOXIDE

SYNONYMS: CARBONE (OXYDE de) (French); CARBONIC OXIDE; CARBON OXIDE; CO; EEC No. 006-001-00-2; EXHAUST GAS; FLUE GAS; KOHLENMONOXID (German); 882 LASER GAS; LASER GAS 920L; MONOXIDE; MONOXIDO de CARBONO (Spanish); OXYDE de CARBONE (French); POLY II GAS

IDENTIFICATION:

CAS: 630-08-0

DOT ID: UN1016 (compressed); NA9202 [refrigerated (cryogenic) liquid]

Hazard class or Division: 2.3 (POISONOUS GAS)

ERG Guide: 119 (UN1016); 168 [UN9202]

Formula: CO

RTECS No: FG3500000

Properties: Flammable colorless gas or cryogenic liquid. Odorless. Liquid floats and "boils" on water; slightly soluble; poisonous, flammable visible vapor cloud is produced. Under certain conditions the gas is heavier than air; can collect in low areas. Uses: In metallurgical operations and refining: reducing agent for oxides; making metal specialized metals and steels, zinc pigments.

HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION

• IDLH: 1,200 ppm

• OSHA Table Z-1 Air Contaminant

• NIOSH Criteria Document : NIOSH 73-11000

• Inhalation may affect the blood, cardiovascular system, and central nervous system. High level exposures may cause drowsiness, loss of consciousness, and death. Affects the blood, resulting in the formation of carbon monoxide in the body (carboxyhemoglobinemia). Carbon monoxide combines with the red blood cells making them unable to carry oxygen. This results in increased stress on the heart and circulatory system. Alcoholics, smokers, obese individuals and those with heart disease are more sensitive than a healthy person to the effects of carbon monoxide. Skin contact with liquid may cause frostbite.

Exposure Limits:

• ACGIH TLV: 25 ppm TWA; BEI: 3.5% carboxyhemoglobin (CO-Hb) in blood at end of shift; 20 ppm CO in end-exhaled air at end of shift.

• OSHA PEL: 50 ppm/55 mg/m3 TWA

• NIOSH REL: 35 ppm/40 mg/m3 TWA; 200 ppm/229 mg/m3, ceiling limit

• DFG MAK: 30 ppm/35 mg/m3; BAT: 5% carboxyhemoglobin (CO-Hb) in blood at end of shift

Respirator: 350 ppm: SA (any supplied-air respirator). 875 ppm: SA:CF (any supplied-air respirator operated in a continuous-flow mode). 1500 ppm: GMFS [end of service life indicator (ESLI) required.] [any airpurifying, full-facepiece respirator (gas mask) with a chin-style, front- or back-mounted canister providing protection against the compound of concern] P SCBAF (any self-contained breathing apparatus with a full facepiece) P SAF (any supplied-air  respirator with a full facepiece). Emergency or Planned Entry into Unknown Concentrations or IDLH Conditions SCBAF:PD,PP (any self-contained breathing apparatus that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressuredemand

or other positive-pressure mode) P SAF:PD,PP:ASCBA (any supplied-air respirator that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressuredemand or other positive-pressure mode in combination with an auxiliary self-contained breathing apparatus operated in a pressure-demand or other positive- pressure mode). Escape: GMFS [end of service life indicator (ESLI) required.] [any airpurifying, full-facepiece respirator (gas mask) with a chin-style, front- or back-mounted canister providing protection against the compound of concern] P SCBAE (any appropriate escape-type, self-contained breathing apparatus).

Reactivity: Forms extremely explosive mixture with air. Violent reaction with strong oxidizers: bromine trifluoride, chlorine trifluoride, dichromates, lithium, halogenated compounds, and permanganates.

FIRE INFORMATION: Vapors may travel long distances to ignition sources and flash back. Vapors in confined areas or containers may explode in fire.

Hazard Classifications:

Health Hazard (Blue) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3

Flammability (Red) . . . . . . . . . .  . . . . . 4

Reactivity (Yellow) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0

Flash Point: Flammable gas

Flammable Limits in Air: LEL 12%; UEL 74%

Autoignition Temperature: 1128°F (609°C)

FIRST AID: GAS: Move victim to fresh air. Call emergency medical care. Apply artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; induce artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. In case of contact with liquefied gas, thaw frosted parts with lukewarm water. Keep victim warm and quiet. Keep victim under observation. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved, and take precautions to protect themselves. REFRIGERATED LIQUID: Move victims to fresh air. Call emergency medical care. Apply artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. In case of contact with liquefied gas, thaw frosted parts with lukewarm water.
