IDENTIFICATION:
CAS:
123-91-1
DOT ID:
UN1165
Hazard Class or Division:
3 (FLAMMABLE LIQUID)
ERG Guide:
127
Formula:
C4H8O2
RTECS No:
JG8225000
Properties:
Highly
flammable liquid. Colorless. Slight ether-like or alcohol odor. Sinks and mixes
with water. Flammable, irritating vapor is produced. Freezing point is 53°F
(12°C). Vapor is heavier than air; will collect in low areas.
Uses:
Solvent
for metal coatings, adhesives, fats, gums, oils, bitumens, resins, lacquers,
waxes; degreasing of metals; component of industrial cleaning compounds; in
paint removers; cements; polishing compounds; a stabilizer for chlorinated
solvents.
HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION
•IDLH:
500
ppm. Potential human carcinogen.
•IARC:
Group
2B, possible human carcinogen; human evidence, inadequate; animal evidence,
sufficient.
•NTP:
Anticipated
human carcinogen.
•Odor threshold:
3.0 detection–640.5 mg/m3 recognition.
•OSHA

•NIOSH Criteria Document
: NIOSH 77-226
•Chemical
protective clothing is recommended because vapor and liquid can be dermally
absorbed and may contribute to systemic toxicity. Vapor irritates the eyes and
respiratory tract. High concentrations of vapor may affect the central nervous
system, resulting in fatigue, the inability to concentrate, loss of
coordination, drowsiness, and loss of consciousness. Prolonged exposure to
concentrations above 100 ppm has been shown to lead to severe liver and kidney
damage, lung congestion, and death. Chronic exposure may cause skin
sensitization, drying and cracking. Repeated skin exposure can contribute to
the development of liver and kidney damage. May be a human carcinogen.
Exposure Limits:
•ACGIH
TLV: 20 ppm TWA (skin) animal carcinogen.
•OSHA
PEL: 100 ppm/360 mg/m3 TWA (skin)
•NIOSH
REL: 1 ppm/3.6 mg/m3 /30 min., ceiling limit
•(skin)
Potential carcinogen. Reduce exposure to lowest feasible level
•DFG
MAK: 20ppm/73 mg/m3 (skin), Category 4 carcinogen (no contribution to cancer
risk is to be expected)
Respirator:
At
any concentrations above the NIOSH REL, or where there is no REL, at any
detectable concentration:
SCBAF:PD,PP
(any self-contained breathing apparatus that has a full facepiece and is
operated in a pressure-demand or other positivepressure mode) SAF:PD,PP:ASCBA
(any suppliedair respirator that has a full facepiece and is operated in a
pressure-demand or other positive-pressure mode in combination with an
auxiliary self-contained breathing apparatus operated in a pressure-demand or
other positive-pressure mode).
Escape:
GMFOV [any airpurifying,
full-facepiece respirator (gas mask) with a chin-style, front- or back-mounted
organic vapor canister] SCBAE (any appropriate escape-type, selfcontained
breathing apparatus).
Reactivity:
Anhydrous
form forms explosive mixture with air. Air and moisture form unstable
peroxides. May accumulate static electrical charges, and may cause ignition of
its vapors. Incompatible with strong oxidizers (e.g., permanganates,
dichromates, or chlorine), and strong acids. Attacks many plastics. Avoid
direct sunlight.
FIRE INFORMATION:
If material or contaminated runoff enters waterways, notify
downstream users of potentially contaminated water.

FIRST AID:
Move
victim to fresh air. Call emergency medical care. Apply artificial respiration
if victim is not breathing. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Remove and
isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance,
immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Wash
skin with soap and water. Keep victim warm and quiet. Ensure that medical
personnel are aware of the material(s) involved, and take precautions to
protect themselves.
